What is Mobile Broadband?
Mobile broadband allows you to connect to the internet over the mobile phone networks. Generally if you can get phone reception in a particular area you will be able to connect to the internet using the supplied USB dongle that plugs directly in to your laptop, netbook or desktop PC. This is different from WiFi which requires connection to a wireless router and has limited range. In most areas you will be able to access your networks 3G (HSDPA) network which provides much faster download speeds similar to traditional broadband.
How Does Mobile Broadband Work?
Mobile broadband is very easy to set up - when you sign up you will be sent a USB dongle or USB stick and a new sim card. Plug the sim card in to the dongle in the same way that you insert a sim card in to a new phone.
Now plug the dongle in to your laptop or PC and drivers and software should automatically be installed. This may take a few minutes. Once this step is completed an easy to use piece of software will launch and guide you through any additional steps to get you online. Once you are connected you can surf the internet as if you were at home or in the office.
How Do I Know Which Option to Choose?
Probably the most important consideration when choosing mobile broadband is how often you are going to use it and how much data you are going to download. Deals are generally measured in Gigabytes (GB) and typically come in 3GB, 5GB, 10GB and 15GB per month options.
If you only plan to use the internet to check emails, post a few blog comments and download small attachments then choose the lower data limits (1GB to 3GB). If you are going to be downloading software, video and music then you should choose a higher data limit (10GB to 15GB). Then it is a matter of balancing up monthly costs and term of contract and deciding whether it is worth paying extra for a free laptop deal.
