The new iPhone device simply called the iPhone 3G includes a number of key new features including as the name suggests 3G internet, a new lower price, availability in more countries and also more focus on the corporate/enterprise market. The device will also be available in white.

3G Internet Access
The biggest drawback in the original iPhone was its lack of 3G. Apple blamed this on poor battery life but now claim to have overcome this with some clever antenna engineering. So what does this mean for your average user? Faster browsing, downloading and emailing, that's what. The phone uses the industry standard HSDPA/UMTS system so you can download over the O2 network form anywhere at twice the speed of the previous model. As well as 3G the phone switches seamlessly between HSDPA, WiFi, GSM and Edge.

GPS Capabilities
The new iPhone comes with mapping, GPS and satellite navigation capabilities to provide you with directions, help you find nearby businesses and points of interest and can also provide traffic information. The device uses a combination of GPS, WiFi and mobile antenna mast triangulation to plot your position. The mapping application also provides a satellite view of your location and you can extend the functionality with the new App Store.

App Store
Apple are launching a new iPhone App store so you can download specially design software and applications for the phone including free and licensed programmes. Software can be downloaded wirelessly over whatever available network is available (3G, WiFi etc...). Users simply browse the stores categories, find what they are looking for and download, the app is then installed and also you will be notified of updates as they become available.

Enterprise Features
Apple are trying to muscle in on the Business sector too and have licensed a number of Microsoft systems to enable more integration with company emails and networks. The new iPhone 2.0 software supports Microsoft Exchange Active Sync for push email, contacts and calender and a Cisco VPN client to connect securely to remote networks. There is also a remote wipe feature to wipe any sensitive information on a lost or stolen device.

How to Buy
O2 and Carphone Warehouse will be selling the new iPhone 3G from the 11th July with a new price tag of £99 for the 8GB model on an 18 month £30 or £35 contract. The 16GB model is £159 on these plans. The 8GB version will be free on £45 and £75 contract plans. The 16GB model is free on the £75/month plan and £59 on the £45/month plan. A Pay as you go version is also in the pipe line so watch this space. Existing customers can get a new device so long as they commit to a further 18 month contract.

The Verdict
The original iPhone broke new ground with its minimal looks, fancy features and interactive touch screen interface but it was somewhat lacking on some of the more technical features common place on devices at the time such as GPS and of course 3G. With the addition of these features it pretty much matches the most high end of devices plus the price is now much more affordable making it much more enticing. Apple have eliminated nearly all the hurdles that stood in the way of the original device so we expect demand for this device to be huge.

Apple are also taking steps to increase additional income streams by extending the device in to the corporate market place and also with the launch of the Apps store they may be able to create a new kind of iTunes for your Mobile. We will have to wait and see if it can topple the BlackBerry as the must have business device.

The final hurdle that Apple needs to overcome is to release the device on all major networks. How many times have you heard someone say 'if it was on Vodafone or T-Mobile I would buy one'. If or when they eventually do this global domination may be possible but until then expect a lot of competition and innovation from the existing brands and networks.

3G Apple iPhone Expected in June

News articles have started circulating, originating from Gizmodo that the second generation 3G version of the Apple iPhone will be launched imminently. The news is supposed to have come from an inside source and it is expected to be launched at Apple WWDC keynote on the 9th of June and is expected to go on sale worldwide shortly afterwards.

Another source close to the Apple iPhone is believed to have reported that new sales policies will be unveiled and the device will not have a fixed price - perhaps this means new networks and more competitive pricing but knowing Apple they will try to tightly control this and try and make a buck or two through exclusivity deals.

This semi-official announcement follows on the back of a number of rumours that a second generation 3G iPhone was about to be launched after O2 and Carphone Warehouse ran out of the current iPhone model and said they would not be restocking supplies.

How to set up an Asus Eee PC with Mobile Broadband

If you have ever asked "can I set up my Eee PC with mobile broadband" or "how do I connect a USB modem to my Eee PC" then the answers are "yes" and " we will show you how". The device will be the first PDA to feature Windows Mobile 6.1. Other key features include a customised Opera Mobile web browser which includes touchscreen controlled zooming and panning, a tilt detection mechanism that reorientates the screen depending on whether you hold it landscape or portrait and YouTube and Google map applications.

HTC have upgraded their TouchFLO interface, the new version is TouchFLO 3D and has many of the features found on the iPhone including sliding, dragging and velocity type motion - the icons keep moving after you let go of sliding them. Its all designed for single thumb usage instead of the style and lets you interact with your contacts, messages, photos, music, email, weather, programmes and phone.

Unlike the iPhone the HTC Touch Diamond comes with high speed HSDPA 3G 7.2Mbps internet access plus it uses HSUPA which makes uploading files and data much faster. WiFi and bluetooth are of course also included. A 3.2 auto-focus camera, 4GB of storage and GPS system complete this feature rich versatile PDA.

The name of the phone is taken from its geometric faceted back panel design. The front of the device is a highly polished glassy touch sensitive screen hi resolution 2.8" VGA screen with a few standard buttons and a jog wheel for additional navigation and interactivity.

Although many of the features on the HTC Diamond may have already been seen on the Apple iPhone I think this device has the potential to make HTC a more mainstream brand among high end mobile phone users and not just PDA and Windows Mobile fans.

The HTC Touch Diamond is due for release on the 19th of June and is available to pre-order now at the price of £439.95 direct from PowerupMobile.com

Three Launch Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband

Three have launched a very affordable pay as you go (PAYG) mobile broadband service in addition to their pay monthly mobile broadband package. The tariffs are also identical to the pay monthly service.

The only major difference is that you pay upfront for the USB modem dongle. But just to make it even better 3 have slashed the cost of these in half to only £49.99 for the standard and ZTE modem. The new USB stick version costs £99.99.

There are 3 tariffs to choose from depending on your expected bandwidth usage - Lite, Plus and Max.

The Toshiba G450 is a Swiss army knife of devices, not only can you use it as a phone but it can also be used as a mobile broadband USB modem (3G/HSDPA), a USB memory card and an MP3 player.

The device itself is similar in size and shape as the pebble shaped modems from T-Mobile and 3 measuring 98mmx36mmx16mm so it's pretty small and light weighing just over 50 grammes.

It has some pretty wacky styling with two separate circular keypads and a matching circular LCD display.

I see this device more as a USB Modem with a few extra features thrown in for good measure. It could come in handy as a second phone or convenient USB stick for transferring a few documents between laptop and desktop.

The price tag of £144.95 is also in keeping with a USB modem once you add on the extra features. A brave concept from Toshiba, time will tell whether it catches on or not but in the world of mobiles and gadgets there are always lots of surprises.

The Toshiba Portege G450 is due out the middle of next month but is available for pre-order now.

Opening the Box
The packaging is pretty straight forward with adequate protection for the unit but by no means the glossy packaging you would expect on a high end ultra mobile PC like the OQO or HTC Shift.

The box includes the Asus Eee PC device, the battery, power supply, quick start guide, warranty card, a full user guide, a support CD, Linux recovery CD to re-install the operating system and also a Windows XP installation guide, just in case you want to migrate the operating system.

Powering Up
The Asus Eee PC itself is pretty dinky and cute, I would say it's about two thirds the size of an average laptop and reminded me of one of those portable DVD players. The casing feels sturdy enough and the screen opens firmly with a decent amount of resistance.

The device starts up in about 30 seconds and there is a simple first run set up which includes a license agreement, keyboard country selection, entering a user-name and password.

Watch out when entering the date an time as the date is entered in US format so it's month first then day, also for location you can only choose Europe > London and no other UK cities but I think this is just a standard Linux thing - it's just to set your time zone anyway.

Internet Tab
And that's pretty much the start up done. You are presented with the simple tab based interface with the main sections being Internet, Work, Learn and Play. There are also settings and favourites tabs and a help button.

First things first, I am going to do set up a WiFi connection. Connection is pretty painless, hot-spots are listed, I choose mine and it asks for the WEP key, that's entered and pretty quickly I have internet access.

The device is set up by default to use a Local Area Network on start up so I switched that over so that the WiFi starts on boot - much better. You might find yourself having to go to the Network and Wireless screens a few times but once everything is set up it should just automatically connect to your preferred WiFi network.

OK, so that's me set and ready to go, let's give the internet a quick check. Click on the big Web icon and Firefox opens up. The first thing that struck about all the windows is that the look just like Windows XP windows - I was expecting something a bit more bespoke and Linux flavoured but perhaps they are trying to keep it looking familiar to what people are used to.

The Asus Eee PC home page comes up but I will of course need to check out www.powerupmobile.com. The screen resolution is 800 x 480 pixels which is great on a small 7" screen but it does mean that you will need to get used to a bit more vertical scrolling.

I checked a few sites jut to see what worked out the box. The new BBC site worked fine, I was able to drag and drop the fancy new interface panels so Javascript works no problem.

I then went on to check YouTube - the Flash video's worked fine with no need to install the Flash Player, which can be a bit of extra work on a standard Linux system. The only plug-in I did have a problem with was playing back an embedded QuickTime audio clip. Basically it's Firefox and it works like it would on Windows or Mac.

So the web works fine, while in the Internet tab I checked out what was underneath the other icons - the majority of them are links to web sites and open in Firefox - for example Web Mail is just links to Hotmail and Gmail, and Internet Radio links to MediaYou.net.

The other two icons include Skype, the well known VOIP service and Messenger - an instant messaging application which is actually called Pidgin - an open source Linux favourite.

It provides a list of known protocols including MSN, I enter my MSN details and my contacts are pulled in including their avatars, I click on my Mate Murray in Canada who has just started work, haha, and sent him a quick message. Easy.

Next I sign in to Skype - Skype on Linux and hense the Asus Eee PC is slightly cut down from the PC version but it pulls in my credits and users list. Fraser is online so I give him a call and have a quick chat talking directly in to the built in microphone.

Work Tab
That's the internet tab covered, next it's work, oh no. The device comes with Open Office applications; Documents - just like Word, Spreadsheets - Excel, and Presentations - Power Point. I'm starting to love the unpretentious simplicity of this device - everything just does what it says on the tin.

I didn't spend too long checking out these applications but Open Office is highly regarded as the leading open source office productivity suite - essentially it will do everything Microsoft Office will and you can move documents between both platforms easily. There is also Adobe Acrobat reader and the file manager/explorer is in here too.

Learn Tab
In the Learn Tab are a selection of educational games aimed obviously at children, for which the Asus Eee PC was primarily designed for. The games break out of the desktop much like a standard PC game and all feature kind of quirky but clunky graphics and sound effects.

The Linux penguin, Tux, also makes an appearance in all the games. There's a spelling/typing game, math (that's American for mathematics), drawing and a link to an educational web site called www.skoool.com.

Play Tab
The Play section might appeal more to adults than the Learn section, it appealed to me anyway. There is the obligatory Solitaire, no PC would be complete with out it. Frozen Bubble - a clone of the classic arcade game Puzzle Bobble - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzzle_Bobble - I love it. Penguin racer which might be fun for a while and Potato Guy which will crack you up.

The Asus Eee PC play tab also includes an array of multimedia play back tools including a media player for playing back films. I tested a DivX encoded movie and that worked no problem - something that doesn't always happen with a new Linux installation.

I checked out the music player with a standard MP3 track and that all worked no problem too. It looks like the media player will automatically search the device for available audio files and you can build libraries and play lists as you would expect.

The photo gallery lets you browse through your images. On first run it seems to squash the image names together so the text on screen overlaps. There is a great thumbnail and zoom feature however that sorts out this problem and lets you enlarge the thumbnail images quickly and smoothly. You can open an image in full screen or run a slide show.

The video manager seemed little more than a file browser that then launched video files in the aforementioned media player.

Settings Tab
The settings tab includes a small number of control panel type icons to change settings of the device. There isn't really that much you can change or set up though - volume, printers, date and time, touch pad, screen. There is an anti-virus system but being Linux based it should be pretty free from viruses.

The one area I thought would be better utilised is the Add/Remove software - on a Linux system like Ubuntu you can download a huge selection of free software via a desktop interface - the Eee PC's lists are empty, maybe this is something they are going to add in the future and it looks like it can be used to update existing software.

Favourites Tab
The favourites section lets you build your own customised selection of icons and applications and the help button opens up a local browser based help manual. It's so simple to use you probably won't need it, I didn't check a single manual or help page to get around the Eee PC and write this review.

Connectivity
The last thing to check out was the devices connectivity. There are 3 USB 2.0 slots, a mic and headphone socket, monitor output, LAN and SD Card socket. I tested the USB ports with my Microsoft wireless mouse. It instantly connected without hesitation.

Next up was attaching my USB backup drive. This also connected without problems even though it's formatted with an NTFS file system. I could move files around no problem between my Windows XP laptop and the Eee PC. The SD card reader also had no problem reading the MicroSD card from my Windows Mobile 6 phone (via an SD adapter).

The Asus Eee PC is an awesome ultra mobile PC, perfect for travelling and internet access on the move or multimedia player. It is also exceedingly easy to use and get your way around. Some of the features will appeal mainly to children but at the same time there are office and other applications that will appeal to adults.

On the downside the system seems quite closed and for the inexperienced Linux user there seems to be few ways to install your own software and extend the devices features. Hardcore Linux users however will enjoy pulling up a shell (ctrl+alt+t) and modifying the system as they wish.

At the end of the day however the Asus Eee PC will meet a lot of peoples needs, either as a quick and simple portable internet enabled multimedia device and at the same time appeal to Linux enthusiasts who can tinker away and hack the device to their hearts content.

The Asus Eee PC is available from PowerupMobile.com for £219.95 the 4GB hard drive version is available for £229.95.

So much so that stocks in the UK have completely run dry with retailers across the country trying to source the unit. At PowerupMobile.com we are working with a number of suppliers to try and get hold of the device as soon as possible and fulfil our pre-orders.

In the mean time we have found a quick online demo that lets you see roughly what the Asus Eee PC can do out of the box:- http://www.honeypothack.com/eee/...

The Asus Eee PC is an ultra mobile PC, a laptop like device only smaller, the unit is 22cm x 16cm with a 7" screen. Instead of running Windows or Mac OS X it uses an operating system based on the open source platform Linux called Xandros.

It's been customised for the Asus Eee PC to only include a simple tab based menu with sections for:

Internet

Work

Learn

Play

Settings

Favourites

Help

Under each are a group of associated applications or web site links represented by large bold cartoon like icons. Pre installed applications and links include Mozilla Firefox web browser, web based email, Skype, instant messenger, word processor, spreadsheet, PDF reader, media player, photo and video album, games and web cam to name just a few.

All in all it's a light weight system that does the basics, is easy to use, keeps you connected and is ideal for travelling or to get your quick fix of emails or web browsing - it boots in about 20 seconds. At around the £200 mark it is also exceptional value for money. To ensure delivery as soon as stock becomes available we recommend pre-ordering the Asus Eee PC now to avoid disappointment. Lead time can be up to 4-6 weeks depending on availability.

The biggest change we have introduced since our site launched is the new contract mobiles comparison service which we rolled out at the start of March.

We've been taking a look at how we sell contract mobiles and also how our competitors and high street shops sell them, and wow, is it competitive out there.

Companies like Carphone Warehouse have been buying up online retailers like crazy increasing their massive buying power and commission bonuses allowing them to offer crazy cash back offers and free gifts.

Well, we thought if you can't beat them, join them. We've teamed up with the leading online retailers and the major networks to promote their deals directly and let you compare mobile contracts across the market. We check the web every day and update our database of deals from the following websites:

3

Carphone Warehouse

To view deals just choose the handset you are interested in then click on the big 'View Deals' button. You will then be able to compare mobile contract deals side by side from a wide selection of retailers and hopefully guide you in making the best decision possible.

Keep an eye on the site as we add new sites to our database and also read our blog regularly where we will be highlighting some of the most popular deals from our partners.
