Following in its foot steps the HTC Hero 2 has been launched as the HTC Legend.

The HTC Legend incorporates a very similar form factor to the original HTC Hero with its turned up thumb area at the base of the handset with a single trackball in the centre. It's had a revamp though with some updated minimalist styling and brushed aluminium casing. The specs are also improved and the latest Android version installed.

The network benchmarking and analysis firm announced the results of a comprehensive survey of UK mobile networks, comparing the data speeds of all five UK operators. The tests, conducted over a 60 day period across 150 UK locations, measured mobile data connection speed at peak periods throughout the day. Cities covered included London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield.

The tests show that in January 2010, O2 offered the fastest average web page access experience in London at 1.7 seconds, over 30% quicker than the slowest operator.

For downloading a music track, O2 was shown to be the fastest operator on average in the UK. It achieved the fastest music download rate in 12 out of 20 UK key cities and was second place in a further four more.

Derek McManus, Chief Technology Officer, O2 told us "We're very pleased with these conclusive findings, which have been independently verified. Our London customers are now seeing the benefits of the investment we made before Christmas, where we spent £30m delivering 40 new sites."

He continued: "Outside London, where network quality is shown to be strong, we continue to scale our investment and have committed to deliver a further 1500 new sites by the end of this year, building ahead of the demand for data services."

The HTC Desire is the flagship device in the group and does for Android what the HTC HD2 does for Windows Mobile. With a 3.7" high res 800x480 pixel AMOLED capacitive touchscreen and 1GHz Snapdragon processor the Desire is one of the most powerful Android smartphones going.

The HTC Legend is in essence the HTC Hero 2, runner up last years runaway success and multiple award winning HTC Hero. With a similar form factor and updated brushed aluminium styling the HTC Legend performs as well as it looks. Not quite as powerful as the HTC Desire but sure to be a huge hit.

Finally the HTC HD Mini takes the user experience of the HTC HD2 and compacts in to a smaller form factor with a slightly scaled back spec. Originally Vodafone were meant to launch it at the tail end of 2009, then it was moved to the middle of January 2010 and now it looks like they will only be selling it to business customers only and we still don't know when.

Hope may be on the horizon and a launch imminent however as Play.com have released the device on pre-order with a due date of 29/01/2010 at a cost of £499.99 - a saving of £50 on the RRP and over £100 cheaper than Expansys who are selling it pre-order for £619.99.

Google have been instrumental in the development of the Android platform but so far sales and handsets have been manufactured and sold by existing mobile phone manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung and Acer. The Google Nexus One will be the first official Google Phone and is expected to be a re-branded high end HTC device.

The latest news, unveiled by Engadget is that Google will be holding an Android Press Gathering on 5th January which has led people to speculate the device will be officially announced. Other bloggers have also been circulating a screenshot from a T-Mobile intranet site with details of a January 5th launch for a new Android / Google / HTC device.

All the news so far points to a US launch but we will keep our ear to the ground for any UK availability announcements and post prices as soon as they are available.
